Road to Tempe 2015: Ragen the Athletics Dropout

With all the speculation about how Ragen plans to spin her impending IRONMAN® 70.3® attempt in October, we thought it would be appropriate to go over some of her previous athletic history. We all know Ragen likes to start things and then drop them as soon as they get difficult. It applies to her business matters, weight loss attempts, and crowdfunded activism. Does it extend to her elite athletics? As it turns out, yes it does.

Back in 2002 when Ragen was peddling Advocare and at her lowest ever adult weight, she planned to enter a 1 mile race, 3K, 5K, and the Capitol 10K. There is no record she entered any of these races, and her abysmal 1:09:50 5K personal record in 2013 is referred to as “my first official 5K“.

Moving on to 2004, Ragen again planned to enter the Capitol 10K. She mentioned it once more in a single training update, then never talked about it again. Records show she never entered.

Still in 2004, Ragen posted about signing up for a “muddy buddy” (a tough mudder style mud race). A few weeks later she dropped out.

In 2005, Ragen declared she would be a professional “Masters Champion” dancer. Records show she attempted to compete in the intermediate division above the noncompetitive and first time amateur levels where she obtained her “national dance championship” titles. She came in last place in every competition, started calling herself a “professional dancer”, and stopped dancing competitively.

In 2014, Ragen announced she would be entering the 2015 LA Marathon. After 7 months of non-updates about her training, she dropped out for a completely farcical reason documented on this very blog.

It’s now 2015, and in 3 months, 23 days, Ragen claims she will be swimming 1.2 miles, biking 56 miles, and running 13.1 miles in under 8-1/2 hours despite having no experience swimming in open water and being unable to ride her bike or run. Will Ragen take advantage of the full refund and add this event to her growing list of athletics dropouts, or does she have something else up her sleeve?

  1. At this point, anyone who thinks that she’s preparing for anything other than a publicity incident at the Ironman event(s), has not been paying attention. I think she is hoping that the medical officials will pull her from the race so she can use this as a moment for activism.
All we’ll hear is “I trained for this race and they pulled me because of fat discrimination. I could totally have done it”! The media won’t research her claims at all.

If I felt like she was really putting an earnest effort into this and really wanted to do this to test her limits and abilities, I would be cheering her on. But, it all rings false to me. She’s either a narcissist or naive to think she can go from barely churning out a 4 mile bike ride to a half IM in a few months. I don’t even know if she could get to a sprint tri at that rate.

    • Except that she can’t prove that she actively trained. In fact, I think her Oronfat blog proves how very unprepared she is for this event.

      • You’re making the huge assumption that the media outlets that would carry a story like this would do anything beyond take her word for it. Oh and don’t you know she only doesn’t post her training because it’s copyrighted (HA) and, um, trolls?

  2. Ragen is using the internet to address some really deep seated problems which, judging from her LiveJournal entries, go back well into her earlier life. This is yet another hustle in what has become a parody of a life. Someone should have intervened in Ragen’s fantasy world long before she got to the point where she was able to surround herself with equally deluded followers.

    • Anyone that brags that their mother sold them for an air conditioner or two in Africa surely has a screw loose.

Not sure if any of you here have kids. But the very thought of ‘selling’ my daughter for a fucking air conditioner is gross. My daughter is not a commodity.

I can joke with the best of them. But there is a line you don’t cross when it comes to your kids. And joking about selling your kids for pennies on the dollar in an underdeveloped country certainly crosses that line. Who the fuck does that?

Even worse – who brags about it like it is a fucking badge of honor?

  3. As someone who averages 18,000 yards per week in the pool, and who does 2-3 open water events every year, I can PROMISE YOU that if Ragen does actually show up, she WILL NOT FINISH THE SWIM PORTION. The “scrum” to get out and into the race course alone will be more than she can handle. Forget the bike or the run…This lazy fucking attention whore will be pulled pit by the first lifeguard safety boat she sees. Don’t even get me started on the “wetsuit” she’s “rented”

  4. […] By late 2003, Ragen had aspirations to become a competitive dancer, and she recognized that 270 pounds was not a realistic weight, despite her commitment to body positivity and not losing weight. She came up with a four month plan to lose 32 pounds and improve her fitness. The running goals tie in with the numerous times she talked about signing up for running events and then never bothered to actually train or even register (see Ragen the Athletics Dropout). […]

  5. Unquestionably imagine that that you said. Your favourite justification appeared to be at the internet the easiest factor to understand of.

I say to you, I definitely get irked at the same time as other people consider issues that they
plainly do not recognise about. You controlled to hit the nail upon the top and outlined out the whole thing with no need side-effects ,
other people could take a signal. Will likely be back to get more.
    Thank you
